Article by By Trevor Jensen | Tribune reporter, January 27, 2009

Duane C. Rice took a shine to art and circuses as a boy, and he pursued those interests through adulthood with a career in advertising and a sideline as a clown known as "Hot Stuff."

Mr. Rice, 83, died of complications form Parkinson's disease Sunday, Jan. 18, in the Presbyterian Home in Evanston, where he had lived for the last three years, said his son Lindsay.

Mr. Rice came to Chicago from Battle Creek, Mich., after high school to study at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts under Ruth Van Sickle Ford.

He then worked for a couple of local ad agencies before starting his own firm, Duane Rice Advertising, in the early 1960s. Among his clients was the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co., for which he did a weekly "Fun Facts" feature that appeared in Sunday comics sections, his son said.

A resident of Wilmette for many years, Mr. Rice also worked on the successful 1966 U.S. Senate bid of fellow North Shore resident Charles Percy.

While advertising provided his living, Mr. Rice also practiced art as a hobby. He was a watercolorist and proficient in pen and ink sketches. He traveled widely through Europe, always with his art supplies, and would set up his easel on streets and public squares.

Among his traveling companions was Clarence Schawk, chairman of Schawk Inc., where Mr. Rice freelanced after closing his own shop in the late 1970s.

"He'd sit on the dock when we got off the boat and start sketching right away," Schawk said, recalling trips down the Danube and other European waterways. "Then he'd use them on Christmas cards."

As a boy, Mr. Rice was fascinated by the circus, recalling years later how he would sit on his grandmother's porch to watch the parade of acts when the Big Top came to Battle Creek, his son said. With other boys from town, he found work at the circus, cleaning up and doing other odd jobs.

In 1969, he joined Shriners International and became part of the organization's clown unit. His persona was "Hot Stuff," a chef who wore an oversized toque on his head and a large heart outside his chest. He would walk up to children, press a button and the heart would beat rapidly, much to the children's glee.

"At our company picnics, he'd put on his clown outfit and give the kids a treat," Schawk said.

"Hot Stuff" was voted Clown of the Year for the Chicago area Shriner's clown unit in 1973, said Norm Maske, who performed with Mr. Rice under the name "Stormy."

The clowns would perform at up to 30 parades a year and make numerous visits to Shriner's hospitals, Maske said. They also entertained the crowds at the Shriner's annual circus at the old Medinah Temple.

"He was a natural," his son said. "As long as he could remember, he had two goals: to be an artist and a clown."

Mr. Rice's wife, Margaret, and two of his children, Gregory and Claudia, preceded him in death.

In addition to his son, he is survived by three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 7 in Elliott Chapel at the Presbyterian Home, 3131 Simpson St., Evanston.

Friday night at 8:30 my phone rings and it's Ben Grunat.
Ben: Hey, we're going up to Tahoe tomorrow morning at 4:15 AM. Are you in?
Me: Hell yea.

Ben, Steve, Davy and I headed up to Squaw Valley USA early Saturday morning to shred the gnar and check out some of this year's early winter snowfall. It was my first visit to Squaw and I was impressed with the size of the in-bounds and the snow was decent. Most areas still had about a foot of powder, but it was at least a day old and somewhat packed on the top layer. We started off taking the Funitel to ski Emigrant and back up a couple times to ski Squaw Peak. We then headed back up to ski KT-22, but it seems we missed both Snow King and Granite Chief.

Next time I look forward to exploring the rest of the resort. I was also pretty impressed that Squaw Valley has hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics. Although much of the grandeur is gone from that time, the mountain still can prove it's worthy to host an Olympics.

Santa took over the city on Saturday with Santacon/Santarchy 2008. We all picked up our Santa costumes at Walgreen's (a big $14.99) earlier in the week. Saturday morning we all met at my place to get dressed in our big red suits and headed over to Ross's place for peppermint schopps/shots. At 11:30 we all met up at Pier 39 for some HO HO HO with our fellow Santas. The Pier 39 rent-a-cops were real up tight about everyone boozin' and poured out some of our beer, but no worries, we had plenty more. The first stop was Hooters where Santa ate wings and drank pitchers. Next it was off to Kennedy's & International Sports Bar for more pitchers and window shenanigans and then O'Reilys for Irish car bombs. That's where we lost the group and proceeded to go on a Chinatown bar crawl to Mr. Bings, Bow Bow Lounge, Grasslands, Red's Place and Buddha Bar before calling it a night after a long day. Santacon was great for the second year and we'll definitely be going next year!

Santa is coming to town

UPDATE: Check out the pictures from this year!

Get ready for tomorrow because the bad boys and girls are partying in the streets of San Francisco. Santa just announced his HO HO HO Here We Go starting times and locations. This year there are 3 routes all starting at 11:30AM in separate locations which will converge with the Oakland Santas somewhere down in Soma. This year also promises to be the biggest SANTACON/SANTARCHY ever with numbers expected to be in the 1,000s.

We've decided to go on the Klassic Kringle route starting @ the Carousel in Pier 39. 11:30am sharp! The route is described as "Santa hits Fisherman's Wharf and other favorite hotspots (that will still have us). Suggested props: Signs (Elfcare for Everyone, Santas Demand More milk & Cookies, etc.) Celebrate Santa's many corporate friends & partners by displaying your favorite sponsor on your suit."

Here's the plan for tomorrow

10:15AM - Prebooze with the elves in the workshop. Hosted by Ross, his place is placed at Grant & Green (streetview). Plan to be over there for some peppermint schopps/shots and yuletide cheer . We will leave Ross's place around 11:15AM to go to Pier 39.

11:30AM - SANTA'S COMING, SANTA'S COMING! We meet up at the Carousel in Pier 39. The day begins, get your santarchy on as we bust through the city stopping at bars and spreading christmas cheer.

After this it's still a mystery, so we'll go where Santa takes us...

What you'll need for tomorrow

Santa Costume - It can be of any shape and size, but it must be Santa or Christmas related (last year there were raindeer and Jewish santas) Oh and good walking shoes too because Santa needs to shed some pounds for Mrs. Claus.

Beer/Whiskey - Santa likes to brown bag , it's no secret in the North Pole. Bring some of your favorite beer, whiskey, peppermint schopps to keep Santa warm.

Money/ID - Santa plans on spending some money on hookers when we reach the Loin. Be sure to bring some $$$ and your ID!

Backpack - Holds your beer and other shit. Can be used as a flotation device in the event of a water landing.

Umbrella - In case it rains, Santa hates being wet. Maybe bring an umbrella .

On our bike ride today we caught up with the many Prop 8 protests & rallies going on in the city today. There were lots of people peacefully protesting at city hall. Further down on market protesters had blocked the on-ramp to 101. People were getting arrested and put in paddy wagons while traffic was stopped in all directions. Protesters then marched from Dolores park up Church with signs and large rainbow flags chanting Prop 8 songs. It appeared they were on their way to Union Square if I heard them correctly. Today the city is very alive with Prop 8 protests as the city is pissed this was passed.
